Local Artist Shares Life Stories from Living in Kuwait

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.--A local woman uses her artwork to educate students and the community about different cultures.

Yvonne Wakefield spent six years in Kuwait, teaching young people about the arts. She said it was tough work, often feeling limited in her artistic expression.

But she continued to paint. Now her portraits and paintings hang in the Larson Gallery at Yakima Valley Community College for everyone to see.

"I didn't want to take the chance because of misinterpretation, censorship so I waited until I got here to show them," said Wakefield.

The Larson Gallery works to integrate the arts with school curriculums, and several classes studied Wakefield's work.

The exhibit will be taken down in a couple of days and then moved to an art center in Oregon.
