Immigration Services Warning not to Seek Advice From Notarios

Posted: Updated: - U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services are warning immigrants not to seek advice from people who call themselves notario.

This comes after a Pasco man was arrested Tuesday for swindling immigrants out of thousands of dollars.

The Franklin County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Jose Antonio Martinez, 43, for unlawfully practicing law.

In other countries, notario means attorney and they can work as notary publics and immigration consultants but not in the United States.

"They're just at a disadvantage and they're vulnerable to scams and frauds by these people who are just taking their money, but they really can't advise them legally," said Roach Law Offices Attorney Alva Guizar.

Guizar says people looking for immigration assistance can always go online to the Washington State Bar Association's website to verify whether a representative is a licensed attorney.
