DEA Drug Bust Update: Trial Date Set For First Group Of Defendants

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. - A Federal judge set a December 2nd, 2013 court date for nearly two dozen of the 62 defendants in an alleged prescription drug ring that operated between Spokane and Los Angeles, California.

Most of the 22 defendants appeared in a pre trial conference Thursday, while others were represented over the phone by their attorneys.

Spokane business owner Sally Guthrie is included in this group. She is the principal owner of Flamin' Joes' in Spokane and Spokane Valley. She is charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Most of the court documents in this "massive" case remain sealed. In court Thursday prosecutors say they have, "Hundreds of thousands of pieces of evidence," including surveillance photos and videos, several controlled drug buys, police reports, social media photos and record of 20,000 phone calls submitted as evidence from August 2012 to December 2012.

DEA agents previously told KHQ that this was more than a six month investigation. Court documents suggest it had been going on for several years. Federal prosecutors say they are in the process of distributing the evidence and court documents to defense teams.

Some of the 62 defendants are in custody while others facing more minor charges are not in jail. At least 22 of the suspects will be tried in Spokane.
