TEMPE, Ariz. - Collin Slaybaugh collected four hits and Joe Pistorese pitched into the seventh inning as Washington State opened Pac-12 play with a 15-4 victory over No. 14 Arizona State at Packard Stadium, Friday night.

The Cougars (10-6, 1-0 Pac-12) staked Pistorese (2-1) to a lead with four runs in the top of the third. Slaybaugh and Brett Jacobs singled to open the inning. After Trace Tam Sing hit into a force out at third, Trek Stemp's single plated Jacobs with the game's first run. Adam Nelubowich singled to score Tam Sing and Nick Tanielu walked to load the bases. With two outs, Jason Monda came through with a two-run single to extend Washington State's lead to 4-0.

After the Sun Devils (10-3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) scored a run in their half of the third, the Cougars responded with two runs in the fourth off Trevor Williams (3-1), who had surrendered just three earned runs in 30 innings pitched entering Friday.

Slaybaugh reached on an error to begin the inning. He stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Jacobs, and scored on a single by Tam Sing. Stemp singled to send Tam Sing to third and Nelubowich's RBI-ground out increased the Cougars' lead to 6-1.

In the sixth, Slaybaugh doubled, moved to third on sacrifice by Jacobs, and scored on a single by Tam Sing. In the seventh, Tanielu singled and Yale Rosen doubled to put runners at second and third. Two outs later, Slaybaugh doubled to drive in two runs and push Washington State's lead to 9-1.

Arizona State answered with three runs in the seventh and chased Pistorese, who pitched into the seventh inning for the fourth-straight start. Kellen Camus came on with a runner at second and two outs and induced a ground out to end the inning. In the eighth, the Sun Devils put runners at first and second with two outs before Monda relieved Camus and got a ground ball out to end the threat.

Washington State tacked on six runs in the ninth to open up a 15-4 lead. Austin Pernell was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a ground out by Monda, and scored on a P.J. Jones single. Slaybaugh followed with a single that scored a hustling Jones all the way from first. Jacobs and Tam Sing walked to load the bases and pinch hitter Shea Donlin was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Nelubowich singled to score a run and Tanielu followed with a single to knock in two more.

The series continues at 6:30 p.m., Saturday.
