Car Prowlers Take Urn with Mother's Ashes Inside

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Electronics weren't the only items stolen during car prowls this weekend, and definitely not the most precious.

The bond between Lakaii Rubin and her mother couldn't be broken by her mother's sudden death in January. Instead, it was broken by thieves.
Rubin kept an urn filled with her mom's remains in the console of her SUV. On Friday, she parked her vehicle at the Columbia Center Mall in Kennewick for a quick shopping trip, not realizing that her most valued possession would catch the eyes of car prowlers.

"I walked up to the truck to put the key in the lock, and there was no lock for my key to go into," said Rubin.

Rubin says she didn't think she would be a target, because the urn and its contents wouldn't be valuable to anyone else.

"You can tell its not drugs, its black and white like an ashtray," she said.
She is begging that someone will return what she has left of her mother, and best friend.

"My mom is very important to me. She's all I have left. She's the only family I have," said Rubin.
