Immigrant Tuition Bill Clears Ore. Senate Panel

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ore. - Young illegal immigrants in Oregon are one step closer to being able to pay in-state tuition at Oregon universities if they were brought to the U.S. as children.

The Senate Education and Workforce Development Committee approved the measure Tuesday, setting the stage for a vote in the full swing Senate later this week.

The bill is likely to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate. It was already approved in the House, and Gov. John Kitzhaber says he will sign it.

Illegal immigrants who graduate from Oregon high schools and meet university entrance requirements would be eligible for lower tuition rates paid for by Oregon residents.
