Washington's Attorney General Tours Hanford

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. - Washington's Attorney General toured Hanford for the first time Wednesday.

Bob Ferguson says he firmly plans to enforce the Tri-Party Agreement with the federal government to clean up the site, despite budget pressures.

He says it is an ongoing process but his office is looking into the agreement to see if the leaking tanks could change their legal position.

Ferguson says the current budget does not release the federal government from their legal obligations to clean up the site in a timely manner.

"As the attorney for the state, that's my job to enforce those agreements. We have a legal team in place in the Office of Attorney General, some joined us for the tour and we received weekly briefings on how we're proceeding and what our legal options are to make sure we give good legal advice to the governor and other clients here in Washington state," Ferguson said.

Ferguson wrapped up his trip to the Tri-Cities today with a visit to the Kennewick Police Department.
