SPOKANE, Wash. – Behind seven strong innings of one-run ball, Gonzaga University baseball starting pitcher Tyler Olson (4-1) led the Zags to a 8-1 victory over 25th-ranked University of San Diego Saturday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Six Bulldogs had a RBI against the Toreros with Brock Slavin's two to lead the team.

The win propels the Zags to 14-6-1 overall mark and 4-1 West Coast Conference record. The loss gives San Diego its second WCC loss and puts the team at 14-8, 3-2 WCC.

Unlike Friday's game, Gonzaga was the first team on the board Saturday night.

Mitchell Gunsolus, reaching base safely for the 18th consecutive game, singled up the middle to get the Zags offense going in the bottom of the first. GU would load the bases for Billy Moon who hit into a fielder's choice but brought a run in.

Gunsolus' hit also extended his team-best hitting streak to 13.

The early 1-0 lead would hold until the fifth inning where GU added two more runs.

Caleb Wood reached on a base hit to start the 5th and USD starter Dylan Covey would start to unravel. A wild pitch from Covey moved Wood two bases to third. Gunsolus would walk to put runners on the corners. Cory Lebrun then singled to the left side bringing home Wood.

Not to be outdone, Clayton Eslick followed LeBrun's hit with a single to right field bringing home GU's third run. San Diego escaped the inning with no further damage but the Bulldogs had given Olson more than enough to pick the victory.

USD got one in the sixth with a triple and double to open the inning but the Toreros would not come any closer in the game.

Gonzaga pulled away in the seventh with five more runs to push its lead to 8-1. Marco Gonzales and Alex Bonczyk each hit a RBI single in the inning but it was Slavin reaching on an error by the first baseman that brought two runs in.

Olson was relieved in the eighth inning by Kenny Smith who finished the game. Olson finished his night allowing just eight hits, one run, striking out six and only walking one Torero.

Gonzaga scored its eight runs on nine hits with two San Diego errors.

The Bulldogs have won two consecutive series against WCC teams and will go for the sweep over San Diego Sunday at noon.
