M's Cant Hold Early Lead Against Arizona

Posted: Updated:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners slugged a pair of homers, giving them an MLB-leading 50 this spring, but dropped an 8-4 decision to the Arizona Diamondbacks in front of a sellout crowd of 12,864 fans at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Cactus League play on Sunday. The crowd was a new stadium record.

Franklin Gutierrez (#4) homered to lead off the game, and Kendrys Morales hit a long, three-run homer in the third inning, his sixth of the Spring, to give Seattle a 4-1 lead. The pair of homers gave Seattle 50 longballs this spring, one off the club record of 51 set in 1999.

Joe Saunders (1-1) started and was charged with the loss. He allowed 8 earned runs in 5.0 innings of work, with most of the damage coming in Arizona's five-run third inning. Arizona capped its scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth inning off Saunders. Kameron Loe worked two shutout innings (2 H, 3 SO) and Lucas Luetge pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Endy Chavez, who signed a minor league contract this morning and was added to camp as a non-roster player, made his debut and doubled in his only at bat. Dustin Ackley was two-for-four with a double.

Paul Goldschmidt did the bulk of the damage for the Dbacks, finishing the game two-for-two with two runs, four RBI, and his second homer of the spring.

The Mariners (18-10) continue Cactus League play tomorrow traveling to Goodyear to face the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear Ballpark. Right-hander Brandon Maurer (2-1, 1.20) will make his third spring start (6th appearance) against Reds right-hander Homer Bailey. The game will be broadcast by 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network.
