Zags Lose Finale to USD, but Take Series

SPOKANE, Wash. – In a back-and-forth affair, Gonzaga University baseball dropped 10-9 to 25th-ranked University of San Diego Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The game featured six lead changes and nine combined errors but it was the Toreros who scored twice in the ninth to take the late lead.

Gonzaga did however win the series 2-1. The Bulldogs are 14-7-1 overall and 4-2 in West Coast Conference play. San Diego improved to 15-8 and 4-2 WCC.

The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead after the third inning. Marco Gonzales, who finished the day 4-for-6, hit an RBI double to bring home a run and Nicholas Minteer was hit by a pitch to bring in another.

But it would be the fifth and sixth inning that would decide the game. USD outscored GU 7-4 in the two innings.

With two outs, the Zags would have back-to-back fielding errors that began the three run USD fifth inning. Dillon Haupt hit a bases loaded double bringing in a pair of Toreros and another base knock gave San Diego a 4-3 edge.

Gonzaga countered with two runs of its own in its half of the inning. Minteer hit a RBI double and Alex Bonczyk singled in a run to give GU a 5-4 advantage.

However, San Diego responded with four runs in the top of the sixth. The Toreros took advantage of a Bulldog fielding error, two walks and a wild pitch to gain an 8-5 lead.

The first four Gonzaga batters reached base to open the bottom of the sixth and Caleb Wood hit a sacrifice fly to center field but the Zags still trailed after the 7th inning 8-7.    

The Bulldogs took its final lead of the game in the eighth when Cabe Reiten hit a bunt single to bring home the go-ahead run. Heading into the ninth inning, GU led 9-8.

San Diego scored the tying and go ahead run on a two out RBI base hit and a bases loaded walk.

Starting for the Bulldogs was Derek Callahan (1-1) who worked through 5.2 innings giving up six hits, seven runs but only one of them earned. Arturo Reyes (2-1) picks up his first loss of the season.

Gonzaga has Monday off before hosting Brown University Tuesday for a doubleheader at Patterson Complex. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. with the second game starting 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
