Coroner Says Taser Didn't Cause Death of Jail Inmate

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.- The Benton County coroner says a jail inmate who died last December suffered an epileptic seizure.

Corrections officers tased Kevin Culp, 29, after deputies say he became combative with nurses.

Coroner John Hansens says the taser didn't cause the seizure.

Sheriff Steve Keane says the officers and nursing staff did what they thought was right at the time.

"He's six foot five, a young man, extremely strong and we have a duty to protect the other inmates, the staff and protect Mr. Culp,' Keane says. "Our intent was to help him, but we had to secure him."

Hansens says due to the weekend, Culp had to go without his medication, but Hansens say Culp was not at risk.

Culp was serving a sentence for violating terms of his release from a manslaughter conviction in Idaho.
