Va. Marine Base Shooting Victim Was Full Of Dreams

Posted: Updated:

OAKLEY, Calif. (AP) - Family members are remembering a Marine from Northern California who was shot and killed at a base in Virginia as brave and full of dreams.

The mother and sister of Lance Cpl. Sara Castromata, of Oakley, says the 19-year-old joined the Marines because she believed it was the toughest military branch and she was a tough girl.

Castromata graduated from high school with honors in 2011 and enlisted in the Marines that same year so she could pay her own way through college, even though her father wanted to pay for it.

Military officials say Castromata was killed Thursday by 25-year-old Sgt. Eusebio Lopez, of Pacifica, Calif., at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va.

Lopez also fatally shot 23-year-old Jacob Wooley, of Guntown, Miss., before killing himself.
