Sunnyside Man Convicted of Manslaughter for 2-Year-Old's Death

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - A Yakima jury says a man from Sunnyside is guilty of manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

21-year-old Juan Lopez is now facing two to ten years in prison, with credit for the nearly two years he's already been in jail. The jury found him innocent of a murder charge.

The 2-year-old boy died in August of 2010 while the children's mother was in the hospital, and Lopez was baby-sitting.

Prosecutors say Lopez told police he might have struck the child out of anger for a lack of sleep. Lopez's defense lawyer said fatal injuries could have been caused from the boy's 7-year-old sister jumping on him.
