OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow police to continue getting fake IDs for undercover officers.
For years the Washington Department of Licensing has issued over 1,000 fictitious licenses to officers for clandestine work. The program was so secret, not even the Legislature knew about it.
The Department of Licensing decided to get approval for the program last year after a Kitsap County newspaper submitted a public records request for a story.
The state Senate approved the bill and it is now being considered by the House Transportation Committee. The committee says they do not oppose the program but would like better rules on how the licenses are used.
