Plenty of Career Fields in the Fields

KENNEWICK, Wash. -There's more to farming than driving a tractor.

That's the seed the Franklin County Farm Bureau is planting in the heads of school children attending the 20th Annual Farm Fair.

"A lot of these kids they drive by these fields and they have absolutely no clue what's out there," says Ramona Rommereim, chair of the Farm Fair committee.

Inside the exhibit hall at the Benton Franklin Fairgrounds, children watch presentations from wheat and potato growers, cattle ranchers, and dairy farmers. The kids play games, including a milking contest.

The goal of the fair is to teach children where their food comes from, how it gets to their plates, as well as encouraging children to explore careers in agriculture.

" It's not just driving a tractor," Rommereim says. "We need a lot of people in finance, business, technology. It's amazing the scope of the fields of agriculture."
