Nob Hill Overpass Decorations in for Cleaning

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- A viewer in Union Gap recently e-mailed us asking about the Nob Hill Boulevard overpass over Interstate 82.

Melissa wants to know what happened to the giant metallic sun decorations that used to be located on the sides of the overpass and if they'll return.

We took her question to the department of transportation.

They told us the decorations have lost their shine over the years. They were sent back to the company that made them for cleaning.

"Assisting us with trying to get this job done quickly and like I said, the suns will rise again," said Brian White with the Department of Transportation.

The DOT expects to have them back in place by next week.

The statues were originally installed in 2007 to spruce up the I-82 corridor in Yakima.

They're made of stainless steel and aren't supposed to darken.

The DOT thinks a coating that was sprayed on the decorations caused the problem.
