Spokane Shock, All In

All in.

In case you haven't heard, that's what the Shock are this season -- all in.

That's the motto that the players swear by this season. It's both their creed and their rallying cry.

All in.

One game into the season -- a 67-41 win at Cleveland on Sunday -- and the Shock are already seeing positive effects from the catchphrase

"We got each other's backs," receiver Adron Tennell. "One guy went out during the game, the defensive lineman had to come in. Never played the position before. He's all in. If somebody on defense goes out and I got to play cornerback, I'm going to go do it. Coach is feeding that to us, putting that into our head.

"All in, all in for one goal, to achieve a championship. We're going to do whatever it takes to get that goal."

The Shock have not had a team motto before, but head coach Andy Olson dreamt up the idea on a flight home from the AFL head coaches conference in Chicago prior to the season. Olson thought about a few quotes, but "all in" kept coming back to him.

So that's what the second-year head coach settled on and he presented the term to the team before training camp began.

"I thought, 'Ah, man, he's just trying to sell some T-shirts,'" Tennell said. "Once we got into camp and he started talking more and more and more and more and more, every day he talking about it, so I'm like, 'OK, coach is serious about it. I'm going to be serious about it with him, too.'

"At first, we thought it was going to go away. Every day, he just constantly, 'All in, all in, why can't we be all in together? Achieve, be perfect. Who said we can't be perfect?' So we're listening to coach, we're all buying together. One big brotherhood."

So far, so good. Of course, the season is just one-week old, but it is already accomplishing what Olson wanted it to do to his team.

Make them all in.
