More Adults than Teens are Texting and Driving

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - A new distracted driving survey says "forget teens, focus on adults!" The AT&T survey found that more commuters than teenagers are texting behind the wheel.

Nearly half of the commuters surveyed say they've texted while driving, 43% of them say it's a habit. And the problem isn't getting better, six out of ten commuters say they never texted behind the wheel three years ago.

AT&T says 98% of commuters know sending a text or email while driving isn't safe, but while the efforts to reduce teen texting and driving are working, commuters seem to need an extra reminder.

The phone company is now calling on employers to help stop the problem by taking action during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April. AT&T is asking businesses to join the more than 165 organizations already engaged in the Texting & Driving-It Can Wait movement. The movement works to make employees aware of the danger, and asks them to join the other 1.3 million people who are making personal commitments not to text and drive.
