Gov. Inslee Proposes Extension Of Temporary Taxes

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Gov. Jay Inslee is proposing a mix of extending temporary taxes and ending some tax exemptions to address both the state's projected budget deficit and a court-ordered requirement to put more money into the state's basic education system.

In his budget proposal released Thursday, Inslee's plan to repeal or modify about a dozen tax exemptions would bring the state more than $565 million. The extension of taxes on beer and business taxes paid by doctors, lawyers, accountants and others, would bring in an additional $661 million.

Inslee also calls to once again suspend voter-approved cost-of-living raises for teachers, saving the state $321 million.

Part of the proposal is reducing the tax break on business and occupation taxes by 25 percent for all industries except aerospace and those charged with radioactive waste cleanup by the federal government.
