US Postal Service Closing Processing Center in Pendleton & Bend

Posted: Updated:

BEND, Ore. - The U.S. Postal Service is moving faster than it had earlier planned to cut expenses, and will close two mail processing centers in Oregon this year.

The two processing centers being closed are in Pendleton and Bend. The Postal Service told union leaders they are among dozens nationwide.

A spokesman for the government agency that gets no tax dollars cites its deteriorating finances. People are turning to the Internet for communicating and paying bills.

Mail in Bend will be processed in Portland, even letters to another address in Bend.

A 2011 study found that closing the Bend center would save $2 million a year, with 40 jobs lost there. Counting those added in Portland, the net reduction is 19.
