Hasty Embrace For Some Lawmakers On Gay Marriage

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - For lawmakers from moderate or conservative states, embracing gay marriage has long been considered a risky move. That reality is being called into question as lawmakers rush to avoid being among the last to join the cause.

Seven senators have announced their support for gay marriage in less than two weeks, just as the Supreme Court is considering two landmark gay marriage cases.

Even the Republican Party's national chairman, who opposes gay marriage, warned Republicans not to, in his words, "act like Old Testament heretics."

Support for gay marriage in the U.S. has jumped dramatically in recent decades. Most polling now shows a majority backing same-sex marriage.
