Ben Franklin Transit Driver Caught Texting Behind the Wheel

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Distracted driving claims many lives every year and that's why one Kennewick woman was upset when she caught a Ben Franklin transit driver texting behind the wheel.

Siera Madrigal was upset when she saw a Dial-A-Ride bus driver texting on the road.

Her disabled brother uses the same bus service all the time to get around town.

Madrigal snapped a picture of the driver trying to hide her texting below the wheel, but Madrigal spotted her through the side door glass.

Ben-Franklin Transit said they have a no tolerance for texting and driving.

Madrigal reported the driver, handing over the picture and the location where she saw the driver.

Her brother became paralyzed after a car accident and she doesn't want to see him or anyone else get hurt on the road.

"People use that because that's they're only way to get around. For someone to take advantage of their job and advantage of those people's lives is horrible," said Madrigal.

"To make sure that our drivers are driving in a safe manor we have an extensive training program. We do have supervisors out on the road all the time and we do keep track of all complaints and follow through," said Kathy McMullen, Ben Franklin Transit.

McMullen said they are looking into who the driver may be.

But she said the most helpful piece of information people can give them is the bus number on the back of the vehicle so they can track who was driving.

Ben Franklin Transit encourages people to report any bad driver behavior you see.
