Governor Declares April as "Safe Digging Month" in Washington

YAKIMA, Wash.-- With spring now in full swing, many people are thinking about starting new projects in their yards.

If that project involves digging, state officials want to remind you to call 8-1-1 first.

Governor Jay Inslee has declared April "Safe Digging Month".

They want to make sure people call and have underground utility lines marked out so they don't make a costly mistake.

"You can put yourself in danger, by hitting a natural gas line or an electric line. If you don't end up calling 811, you may be calling 911 later," says Anna Gill with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.

Washington saw nearly 13-hundred incidents of people damaging gas pipes while digging last year.

Officials suggest you call 8-1-1 and have utility lines drawn at least two days *before* you start digging.
