Yakima City Council Declares Cell Tower & Billboard Moratorium

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council voted for a six month moratorium on new billboards and cell phone towers at its meeting last night.

The action was requested by the Barge Chestnut Neighborhood Association after they found out Verizon wanted to build a tower at a nearby church.

The city says it will use the time to develop new rules on how billboards and cell towers look and where they're built.

"We're going to be exploring different jurisdictions, the way other jurisdictions regulate cell towers, the way other jurisdictions regulate billboards," said Community Development Director Steve Osguthorpe.

While the moratorium on cell towers was due to community concerns, the one on billboards was already planned.

The city says they're concerned with the visual clutter downtown, and billboards are a big part of that.
