Firefighters Warn Against Outdoor Burning

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- With the weather warming up, many people are looking to clean up their yards and get rid of waste.

The Yakima Fire Department says whatever you do, don't burn it.

Crews say outdoor burning is illegal in most city borders and it can be dangerous.

If a small wind picks up it can carry the fire to a home or other structure.

They say even if you don't live within city limits you should check with your local clean air authority or fire department to learn how to do it safely.

"Some of the problems we have had as a department are people just kinda lose track of it and it gets away from them, unforeseen fire problems," said Yakima Fire Captain Tom Schneider.

The department says the best option for getting rid of yard waste is to have a curbside service pick it up or to call your local designated collector.
