Kennewick Community Garden Built for Low Income Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- A WSU gardeners group is partnering with the City of Kennewick to build a community garden.

The green thumbed group got together Saturday to start on that produce patch at Jay Perry park.

The plot is designed to provide a gardening space for nearby households to offer the community some cost-effective healthy foods.

The City of Kennewick is paying for it.

"It's a low income neighborhood. Many of these folks are struggling to feed their families and by having a garden here they can grow a significant amount of produce so they can feed their family throughout the summer."

Dixon said the garden could yield up to 1,800 pounds of produce for the neighborhood.

The Master Gardener Foundation of Benton and Franklin Counties is one of many in the U.S. promoting community gardens right now.
