Lewis & Clark Take Sunday Game vs. Whitworth

by Whitworth Univ. Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Lewis & Clark turned four unearned runs in the sixth inning into a 4-2 win at Whitworth on Sunday, giving the visiting Pioneers a 4-2 victory over the Pirates and a win in the three-game Northwest Conference series.

Ryan Strombom (1-6) threw a complete-game victory on the mound for L&C (8-22 overall, 5-10 NWC).  Nick Scourey pitched well on the mound for the Pirates, but fell to 1-4.

Whitworth (10-17-1, 5-10) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning.  Erik Nikssarian scored on a wild pitch as Gerhard Muelheims reach first on a base-on-balls.  Then Tyler Pfeffer drove a double to deep left-center field to send home Muelheims from first base.  It was Pfeffer's team-leading 29th RBI of the season.

Scourey did not get into serious trouble until the sixth inning.  Following a brief rain delay, the bases were loaded and two were out.  Hayden Higger lofted a fly ball to right field, toward the line.  Whitworth's Thomas Wakem got to the ball, but couldn't make the catch, allowing three runs to score on the error and Higger to reach second base.  Matthew Cathcart followed with an RBI single.

Whitworth got two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Strombom worked out of trouble both times.  He retired the final eight batters in a row to claim the complete-game victory.  He allowed two runs on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Scourey went seven innings, giving up four unearned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and four walks.  Jason Renner threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Whitworth will travel to Pacific University for a three-game NWC series next weekend in Forest Grove, Oregon.
