Zillah Cock Fight Organizer Facing Jail Time

Posted: Updated:

ZILLAH, Wash.-- Court documents paint a much different picture of what transpired inside a ranch building near Zillah on Saturday night, the site of what deputies are calling a cock fighting event.

Originally, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office said about a thousand people were watching the late night cock fighting event. But, according to court documents, the arresting officer says it was closer 150 to 200 people, much smaller then originally reported.

Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin says there was a miscommunication that led to the wrong number being released.

Sheriff Irwin says rooster fighting is a big problem in the county and can be very dangerous, not just for the animals, but for spectators too.

"There's almost always guns and narcotics involved or at the scene. It's a very dangerous environment," Sheriff Irwin said.

Andres Ramirez, the ranch foreman who deputies say admitted to organizing and promoting the fights, has been formally charged with animal fighting.

He could face a maximum of five years behind bars and a $10,000 fine.

Sheriff Irwin says it's not only illegal to organize these fights, but it's also a felony just to watch. However, he says no other arrests were made over the weekend.
