DNR: Get Prepared NOW for Wildfire Season

Posted: Updated:

NBCRightNow.com - Monday marks the official start of wildfire season and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources wants to make sure that you're prepared.

The season runs through October 15th and the DNR says people need to start planning now.

They say to keep a first aid kit on hand, and keep your valuables like photos and important documents in an easily accessible place.

They also say it's important to know more than one evacuation route in case fire blocks your normal escape path.

"Make sure the wood piles aren't piled up against your house, clean your gutters," says Janet Pearce of the DNR.  "Our gutters get full of leaves and a lot of matter and a spark can catch that.  A spark can travel a mile or two even if the wildfire isn't close to you."

The DNR adds that it's important to know your role in the community when it comes to potential wildfire outbreaks and educate yourself about what you can do to protect your loved ones and your property.
