Doing Business in Downtown Kennewick Has Some Limitations

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Kennewick City Council approved some downtown zoning changes last fall in an effort to revitalize the area.

There are very few empty storefronts downtown in what's now considered the 'central business district.' But if anyone is looking to move into those spoces there are some things to know. Thrift shops, tasting rooms, office spaces and restaurants are some of the establishments city leaders are encouraging to move in. Others, though, like tattoo parlors and even churches, have limitations.

"The most important thing to note about that is that none of the businesses that are down there are going to be asked to leave and the zoning doesn't change that. So, nothing changes for existing businesses. But as new businesses come in, it has limitations on certain types of businesses," said Jeff Kossow, Kennewick's Planning and Economic Development Executive Director.

The City is working closely with the Historic Downtown Kennewick Partnership to make these changes. Executive Director Tim Dalton said so far, so good with new businesses looking to come in. He said there's been a positive response and if you do have business in mind that you think should be allowed you can always plead your case.
