YAKIMA, Wash.-- A free medical clinic is growing by leaps and bounds, now helping thousands of people a year in the Yakima Valley.
The clinic at Yakima's Union Gospel Mission has been there for 20 years. It's 100% free for patients and anyone is able to stop in during one of the four clinic days every week to have some tests done, see a chiropractor, or just get a check-up.
The mission is able to offer the service in part.. thanks to the completely volunteer staff, including several registered nurses and doctors in the community.
Dr. Ryan Crafts is the medical director at the clinic. He says they used to see 100-200 patients a year, but since expanding their clinic hours, that's grown to over 8,000 patients a year.
"We started doing clinic four days a week, and once we were here consistently we got more patients and we got a lot more volunteers. And both have increased dramatically," Dr. Crafts said.
Dr. Crafts says last year the clinic served those 8,000 patients with a budget of less than $10,000.
He says they rely on the community for a lot of their medication and medical equipment.
