Less People Riding Yakima Buses

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Fewer people are riding the bus in Yakima. City transit officials say they've seen a 10% drop in use this year.

In February, the city increased single ride bus fares by $0.25 to make up for rising gas prices and they say that's what's  led to a drop in riders.

And while the drop is significant, officials say it's not detrimental to the service.

"It does hurt our budget, however most of our funds come from sales tax, and federal and state grants," said Transit Manager Ken Mehin.

Mehin says they did expect to see the slight drop after raising fares, but he anticipates the numbers to go back to normal by summer of next year.
