Men Strap on High Heels to Raise Awareness for Domestic Violence

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.--More than 100 people including several men, strapped on high heels and walked around downtown Yakima on Friday.

The annual "Walk A Mile In Her Shoes" event raises awareness for sexual assault and domestic violence.

Coordinators said the goal is to give men a better perspective on these issues that affect hundreds of local women every year.

"That's the thing it does is it raises awareness," said Gwyneth Hood, a volunteer for the Victims Services Program. "It certainly makes them stop and look, and they can ask what's going on here. Why are they all wearing these shoes?"

Coordinators said Friday's turnout was the best they've ever had in the ten-year history of the event. They raised close to $1,000 for the Victims Services Program.
