Yakima City Employee Clinic Wins National Award

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima has earned a national award for its MiCare employee health clinic.

The National Public Employer Labor Relations Association gave the honor to Yakima for the city's innovation.

The clinic provides healthcare for city employees at a lower cost by avoiding medical mark-ups.

So far, the clinic has seen 97 percent of its appointment times fill up, so they're now considering extending the clinic's hours.

"A lot of times when something changes and it's new, everybody wants to go experience it and then maybe pull back a little bit. And so we want to make sure that utilization stays steady before we add those hours in," said Cheryl Ann Mattia.

The clinic is expected to save the city around two million dollars over the next three years.

The city says Ellensburg and Walla Walla have contacted them to get information about starting up their own clinics.
