Drive-By Shooting Suspect Crashes Car During Getaway

Posted: Updated:

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE POLICE DEPT: Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Dutch Jake Park, 2200 W Broadway at about 8:22 PM on 04-17-2013. Initial reports were that witness heard what they believed to be about 5 gunshots and saw people running through alleys at that location.

A witness did get a description of the vehicle, a black Pontiac 4 door. Officer Casey Jones did locate the vehicle going northbound on Post at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to stop for police and failed to maintain a left turn onto Stevens from Queen as it slid into a yard and struck a tree.

Both the driver and unknown passenger immediately ran from the vehicle.  The driver was located walking eastbound on Rowan at Washington and taken into custody. Officers did identify him as the driver of the Pontiac.

He was identified as Ricky L Leon, a 32 year old Hispanic male. The passenger was not located with the use of K9 officers and Spokane County Air 1.

A victim with a gunshot wound to his leg did arrive at a local hospital for treatment to the leg.  It was determined that the victim at the hospital and the drive by shooting were related.

Leon was booked into the Spokane County Jail for 1st degree assault.

Spokane Police want the public to know that when police are in the area with the K9, they should remain inside their homes. Officers will give an audible alert when they are in the area for citizens to let them know that a K9 is out and working near their house.

If citizens see a high volume of police in their area, they should remain inside, lock their doors and not take this as a time to investigate. If people stay inside it gives the K9 a better sense of where a suspect may have gone. The more people that walk in the area can cause the dogs to follow a non involved scent.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -The Coeur d'Alene Police Department responded to a bomb threat at the K-Mart on W. Neider Avenue Wednesday afternoon. The call however appeared to be a hoax. Police say K-Mart got a phone call from someone with a "thick accent" who said "I've placed a bomb in K-Mart" and demanded they put money on a pre-paid card for him. He said if they didn't he would blow up the store. Police showed up and found nothing.More >>
