Big Plans For The Spokane Convention Center

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Big changes are on the way for the Spokane Convention Center that include 20,000 square feet added to the exhibit hall as well as the addition of new meeting rooms. These changes were approved by the voters last April.

It's a $50 million dollar renovation to the convention and whoever gets this bid has an ambitious timeline because construction will get going right away. With construction starting this summer and being in operation by January of 2015 according to Kevin Twohig.

The winning bid will be announced on Tuesday. Three front running companies submitting bids are all local. It is expected the expansion will create 800 jobs, 400 during construction and 400 after.

Because the building was approved by the voters it will also be paid for by the taxpayers. All three of the bidders showcased pictures of the plans that they have, one of the groups in the running built both the Spokane Arena and The McCarthey Athletic Center. Officials say it's about what is the best plan and value for the city.
