MALIBU, Calif. – The 24th-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team saw its 11-game winning streak snapped Sunday as the Bulldogs were bested 10-4 by Pepperdine University at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Zags did however win the series against the Waves by taking games one and two.

The defeat is the Bulldogs first in the month of April as the club moves to 26-11-1 overall and 13-5 in West Coast Conference games. Pepperdine improves to 21-17 and 9-6 WCC.

Gonzaga had an early lead in the game by scoring in each of the first three innings. Cory LeBrun brought home Mitchell Gunsolus, who opened the game with a leadoff double, on a ground out to second in the first. Travis Forbes laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring Alex Bonczyk in the second inning giving GU its largest lead at 2-0.

Despite the early success, GU was unable to match the Pepperdine offensive output. The Waves piled on eight runs by the fifth inning highlighted by a Chris Amezquita three run homerun in the fourth. Pepperdine out-hit Gonzaga 13-6.

The Bulldogs struggled all day to close out an inning. All 10 of the Pepperdine runs were scored with two outs in the inning.

Gonzaga used five pitchers in the game with starter Zach Abbruzza (0-2) picking up the loss. Abbruzza lasted 2.2 innings followed by Arturo Reyes (1.1 innings), Taylor Jones (2.2), Billy Moon (0.1) and Derek Peterson (1.0).

Waves starter Aaron Brown picked up the victory in a complete game effort.

Gonzaga now returns to Spokane for a busy week. Starting Tuesday with the University of Washington, the Zags will have five games in five days at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. After a two-game series with the Huskies, GU will host BYU to resume WCC action starting Thursday.
