Eastern State Hospital Patient Changes Plea to Leave Hospital
WALLA WALLA, Wash. - A man who was committed to Eastern State Hospital has changed an insanity plea to leave the hospital.
22-year-old Luis A. Ballesteros was committed in 2011 after he pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to assault charges in Touchet. He says he changed his plea because he didn't want to be forced to take medications indefinitely.
An appeals court ruling allowed him to change his plea this week in Walla Walla. He pleaded guilty to assault and burglary charges, and now faces about three years in prison with credit for 34 months he's been at Eastern.
