Richland Students Band Together to Fight Hunger

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.-  Some Richland Students are taking shelter outside for a night and starving for a cause.

30 hours of fasting, that's just a taste of hunger for the Richland students who are banding together to fight world hunger and help to save lives.

Nearly 7,000 children die each day because of hunger, according to World Vision.  That's one child every 13 seconds.

It started Friday at noon.  No food or comfy beds.  Just make shift cardboard boxes for students at the Richland Church of the Nazarene.

The church's Youth Pastor Chris Degroseillier says these kids are getting just a glimpse of what the world's poorest children and families face every day.

"We'll talk about perhaps some of the ways our lives need to change and where we're comfortable. Maybe some things we can give up ourselves," said Degroseillier.

Matthew Morley has participated in the 30 famine for three years and says it's the least he can do.  "I mean we're not giving up everything here, but the least we can do is give a weekend. The least we can do is give this time and maybe we can feed 5,000," said Morley.

After participating for four years straight, Steffanie Wright says for her it's life changing. " I think through doing this I can imagine it, but not very well. It's hard to picture and imagine doing that everyday and not having the resources we've had," said Wright.

If you'd like to help toward their cause, Saturday April 27th they will be hosting a car wash for donations at the Ace Hardware parking lot in Richland off of Keene Road from 10:30am to 3:30pm.

They will also be going door to door collecting food to help local people in need.

Desgroseillier says for every dollar raised, it can provide food and care for a child for one day.
