Event Encourages Yakima Valley Girls to take on STEM Studies

Posted: Updated:

TOPPENISH, Wash.--More than 250 middle school girls got together at Heritage University Saturday to learn from the professionals.

The event called "Expanding Your Horizons" encourages young girls to get informed about careers in science, technology, engineering and math. It's meant to pique their interest in pursuing those types of jobs down the road.

"This is something for them as well," said Alison Hutchinson, a STEM Career Advisor. "Before it's been pretty male dominated so we just want to make sure that they know that's not the case, and that they're good at it."

Saturday's event was sponsored by Heritage University, the University of Washington's "GEAR UP" Program and the American Association of University Women.
