Gun Control Group Launches Initiative Campaign for Background Checks

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Supporters of gun control in Washington state are launching an initiative campaign to continue the fight to expand background checks on gun sales.

State and Federal lawmakers declined the proposals to expand background checks on gun sales earlier this year.

In the initiative campaign, the group Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility will need to collect nearly 250,000 valid signatures. That will bring the initiative to the Legislature early next year, and then to the ballot if lawmakers fail to adopt it.

Gun buyers must currently undergo a background check when they purchase a weapon from a federally licensed firearms dealer. Lawmakers had proposed expanding that to cover private transactions.
