Two MCC Athletic Directors to Retire This Summer

TRI-CITIES, Wash. - Two of the founding athletic directors for the Mid-Columbia Conference will hang up their clipboards after the school year. Tom Hegarty and Le Burns saw thousands of games in their careers, and after 80 combined years in education the two are calling it quits.

"It will be different, you know you've been in education for 39 years, gotten up everyday and gone to work. It's going to be different just in that respect," said Burns, about leaving Pasco High School.

"I have a daughter that's running in college and I miss a lot of her events and then my son is across the country in the military and I would like to see them more often," said Hegarty.

Both started because they wanted to affect kids.

" (The) best part of everyday is watching the kids compete, having a front row seat. You know it's why you take the job is because you want to be around kids and help them and watch then improve and succeed," added Burns.

"I got into education because I wanted to help young people, and that desire has never changed. I've been in education for 37 years, my energy level may not be quite as high, but I love the kids," said Hegarty.

And both know it's time to move on.

"I really felt like this was the time to go. My energy level is still there but it takes me a little longer in the summer to recover," said Hegarty.

"It's you know time to move on, and it's time to let someone younger come in here and run the show type of thing," said Burns.
