STORY OF SURVIVAL: North Idaho Man Walks For The First Time Following Paralyzing Accident; Alex Rozier Reports

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - On March 27th of last year something happened to John Elsbury that no one could have ever planned. He was driving down the highway after a long day of work when he pulled off the highway to the side of the road and was soon rear ended by a semi truck. Elsbury woke up a week later at St. Al's in Intensive Care. He spent more than a week there before his long medical journey really began.

"I don't have many clear memories of it, no good ones," Elsbury said. "I've been able to overcome a lot of adversity. Waking up with no feeling or sensation from the waist down is a very brutal feeling."

His wife is a physician. She told him hope was not lost. She informed him when he woke that he was an incomplete paraplegic which means that his spinal cord was not lost, but severed.

In the past few weeks with the help of a rehab team at St. Luke's and Thompson's Prosthetics Elsbury began walking. Slowly he's been taking steps.

Elsbury spent most of his time in the small town of Peck, just outside of Orafino, Idaho. He said the support he has received has been incredible.

"I've from a very small community and I think I got a letter from all of them," Elsbury said, filling up with emotion. "It's been a pretty huge experience, a demonstration of love from virtually everybody that I knew."

SPOKANE, Wash. - It took a jury only a little more than two hours on Wednesday to find Daniel Arteaga guilty for the murder of Kim Schmidt. The prosecution said Arteaga was very jealous that his relationship was ending with Schmidt and she was moving on. They say that's part of the reason why he decided to kill her at the beginning of 2012. The defense disagreed saying that Arteaga was not there when she died and they think she may have even died of suicideMore >>
