Same-Sex Couples Welcome Delaware Gay Marriage Law

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Same-sex couples in Delaware say they're looking forward to July 1, when Delaware officially becomes the 11th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriage.

Advocates on Tuesday cheered Democratic Gov. Jack Markell as he signed a gay marriage bill into law just minutes after its passage by the state Senate.

Under the bill, no new civil unions will be performed in Delaware after July 1, and existing civil unions will be converted to marriages over the next year. The legislation also states that same-sex unions established in other states will be treated the same as marriages under Delaware law.

Delaware joins neighboring Maryland and the nearby District of Columbia as jurisdictions that have approved gay marriage. Last week, Rhode Island became the 10th state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- To you, it may be an old gym bag, or a backpack full of homework, but all thieves see is a potential gold mine unmanned in your car. It's a year-round problem in our community, but Black Friday is like Christmas for crooks. "I came back to my car and the window was broke out, everything was gone from the jockey box," said one car prowling victim. "It made me angry, it's a violation."

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A family is beside themselves after a man defecated throughout their home, destroyed family pictures, flooded their basement, and then tried to light the property on fire. The tragedy had them questioning their faith in humanity, until a hero stepped in to help. "We put a lot of work into the house over the past couple months, working full time, we have four kids," said homeowner Rodney Gunther.
