Former Union Gospel Mission Director Dies

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The longtime director of Yakima's Union Gospel Mission has died.

Roger Phillips moved his family to the valley in 1968 to take over the mission that was struggling at the time.

Over the years, Phillips helped grow the facility and even moved their operations to their current site on North First Street.

Phillips' son, who is the mission's current director, says his father helped thousands of people in the community.

"There are people all over this valley whose lives have been changed because of the message, the gospel message that they heard," said Rick Phillips.

A public celebration of Phillips' life will be held on May 14th at 2pm at Westside Church in Yakima.

Phillips suffered from pancreatic cancer and died last Friday. He was 82 years old.
