RICHLAND, Wash.- Kids enjoyed the fun activities set up at Kadlec Regional Medical Center Saturday. While they all had fun they learned some very valuable safety tips along the way.
The games they played had different lessons built into them. A bike rodeo course was set up to teach traffic rules like stopping at the stop sign and looking both ways before crossing. The Seattle Children's Hospital had long lines at their helmet giveaway tent. They properly sized the kids heads and gave them free helmets, and of course they picked their favorite colors.
"The whole idea is to come out and have a great family activity, do something together on a mother's day weekend and at the same time learn some important safety messages," explained Jim Hall, the Director of Community Relations at Kadlec.
Nationally the number of kids killed while riding bikes in the last ten years has decreased significantly by half according to a Center for Disease Control study. This is much in part due to the increased safety lessons kids now receive. The Safe Kids Saturday organizers hope that their event can prevent accidents as well.
