The structures were burned to the ground in a blaze that ignited Sunday in a garbanzo bean elevator.

Hinrichs Trading Co. President Phil Hinrichs told the Lewiston Tribune his company is committed to staying in the community and building a great facility.

There were no serious injuries caused by the fire, which destroyed five structures and covered an area the size of two city blocks. The fire burned so hot that it melted vinyl siding on nearby homes

A state fire marshal is expected to begin an investigation Tuesday into the cause of the fire. An assessment of the damage has not yet been determined.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

CRAIGMONT, Idaho - A fire that broke out in a Garbanzo bean elevator was still burning, 16 hours after it first started. The fire broke out around 2:25 Sunday afternoon. It spread to four bean elevators before fire crews were able to contain the fire, but it could have spread to other elevators and homes in the area.

Fire crews evacuated homes and closed down several streets. The families that had to leave their homes went to the Highland High School, in the Craigmont School District.

That's the reason the Lewis County Commissioners called a state of emergency for the town of Craigmont. Administrators also canceled school on Monday because the smoke was so bad, and the school is only a block away from the elevators.

Crews had the fire under control by midnight and families were able to go back inside their homes.

Crews tell KHQ that the fire will be burning and smoking for the next couple of days.
