NBCRightNow.com - Beginning May 20th, the Washington "Click it or Ticket" campaign will focus on drivers using their cell phones for both calls and text messages as well as unbuckled drivers.
The campaign was introduced in 2002 and mainly focused on seat belt usage after the passing of the primary seat belt law, but now, the number of drivers using their cell phones behind the wheel has increased.
Last year, more than 11,000 drivers were stopped and over 3,000 were ticketed for seat belt violations. Just over 1,000 cell phone violations were written as well, but that has risen dramatically from 64 citations in 2010.
Local law enforcement will team up with the Benton-Franklin Traffic Safety Task Force from May 20th to June 2nd for the campaign.
