SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Washington State 7-6 in nonconference baseball, Monday.

The Gauchos (28-21) rallied against Sean Hartnett (2-2), the fourth pitcher of the day for the Cougars (21-27). A pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt tied the game. An error on the second single and a ground out pushed the winning run to third. Cameron Newell followed with a bunt single to drive in the winning run and make a winner out of Greg Mahle (6-4), who worked three innings in relief.

UC Santa Barbara scored a run in each of the first-two innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead against Washington State starter Tanner Chleborad.

Washington State got on the board in the fifth when Yale Rosen was hit by a pitch, took second on a single by Patrick McGrath, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Nelubowich and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Mendenhall. It was Mendenhall's first-career RBI. The Gauchos responded with two runs on four hits in their half of the fifth to stretch their lead to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, Trek Stemp walked and Collin Slaybaugh singled to open the inning. With two outs, Yale Rosen tripled to the gap in left-center cutting the Cougars' deficit to 4-3.

Washington State tallied twice in the eighth inning to grab a 5-4 lead. Slaybaugh and Jason Monda recorded back-to-back bunt singles to begin the frame. After a sacrifice bunt by Brett Jacobs, Rosen walked to load the bases. McGrath followed with a two-run single to put the Cougars on top.

The Gauchos drew even in their half of the eighth against Washington State reliever J.D. Leckenby on a single, a sacrifice bunt and a double.

The Cougars regained the lead at 6-5 in the ninth on a leadoff double by Trace Tam Sing and a one-out single by Slaybaugh.

Washington State returns to Pac-12 Conference play with a three-game series against Washington. The series begins, Friday at 6 p.m. in Pasco.
