Yakima County Construction Values Soar this Year

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima County Building Officials say they're seeing a big upswing in construction so far this year.

The county has issued about 60 more building permits this year, compared to the same time last year.

However, when you look at the value of those buildings, it's gone from 12 million dollars last year to 39 million this year.

The county says much of that comes from industrial projects along with some residential construction.

"Well, I think it's a pretty good indication that the economy is picking up. The question, of course, that everyone asks is 'will it continue?' I don't know," says County Building Official Dave Saunders.

They also say the growth in residential construction isn't coming from housing developments but from individual property owners, which they say is another encouraging economic sign.
